I Stand With Avalon & Support Survivors of Sexual Abuse 

Last summer I joined the board at the Avalon Sexual Assault Centre in Halifax.

I wanted to help Avalon continue its important advocacy work around prevention, healing and empowerment. I was ready to work hard to try and make a difference. It’s not been easy, but neither is anything worth doing.

Oval too great to give up

Years ago I decided that if I was going to live in a country with about five months of winter, I would embrace it by participating in winter sports, among them skating. I reminisced fondly about skating as a child on the frozen-solid lakes that dot suburban Halifax. The trouble is, due to the fluctuating temperatures Halifax has experienced in recent winters, lately these lakes rarely freeze to the point where you can skate on them without an underlying fear of falling through the ice. I think we can all agree that an unplanned polar bear dip is not much fun.

And then, this year, the Oval arrived. Halifax's big O. O my God. I fell in love.

The speed-skating Oval for the Canada Winter Games, being held in Halifax Feb. 11-27, 2011, opened in mid-December for free public skating in downtown Halifax.
